Revival

An OSM Studio story written by Amanda Jewett

Dynamite. It destroys everything in its way.  The Holy Spirit is literally described as dynamite (dunamis in Greek) in Scripture. Dynamite is lit by a spark, and this March, the Spirit’s spark was lit.

I looked around our current Church and saw God stirring the hearts and minds of our young adults. Just as his Spirit hovered over the waters at Creation, I felt his spirit hover over our small assembly at St. Edward’s in Keizer as voices cried out in prayers, eyes wet and arms outstretched before our Lord.

God has been stirring hearts for ages

God has been stirring hearts for ages, and those of us in the Portland community are witnessing a time of revival right now- reviving our Church in a return to relationship led ministry and evangelization, a deeper commitment to Truth and to Beauty, and an enthusiasm for accompanying those on the margins. How fitting that our title for this night was “Revival.” A time of strengthening. Rallying. Improving.

the twelve apostles, were a ragtag group of teenagers and twenty-something-year-olds.

Our night began with Stations of Cross. Children of the parish took us through each station of Christ’s journey to the Cross, then young adults led our assembly in a deep, Spirit-led time of worship, message, and adoration. It is worth mentioning those who Jesus chose to turn the world upside down, the twelve apostles, were a ragtag group of teenagers and twenty-something-year-olds.

we are not made for comfort. We are made for greatness.

Throughout the night, one message was proclaimed above all others by David- we are not made for comfort. We are made for greatness. Pope Benedict XVI said man was created from the beginning for greatness, for God himself. But our hearts are too small for the greatness to which we are destined. Therefore, our hearts must be stretched.

Jesus lived in greatness, and said, “If you believe in me, you will also do great things- even greater things.” (John 14:12) And here we were, a community of young people, in a warm church on a Friday night in a highly secular area, praising our Lord with all that we had. Greater things indeed.

Jesus lived in greatness, and said, “If you believe in me, you will also do great things- even greater things.”
— John 14:12

This greatness is not a worldly one. It’s not a greatness promising good looks, popularity, safety, money, and power. This greatness is far better. It’s a greatness promising a relationship with Love himself, achieved in making ourselves small, humble, and eager to do the will of God.

This greatness casts out mediocrity. God desires us to co-labor with him, not to waste our lives and our experiences to mediocrity. We were handcrafted for greatness. I pray we allow God to use that.

Reflection

In John 14:12, Jesus promised us we would do even greater things than the miracles his followers witnessed during his time on earth. Jesus promises that  we are now enabled and have the power to change the world and perform the greatest miracle - the conversion of hearts.

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

— John 14:12

We are in a time where, more than ever, we have to ignore voices encouraging inadequacy, apathy, timidity. We are in a time when many go through the motions yet remain cold inside.  But we aren’t made for mediocrity- we don’t aspire or aim for it. We are made for greatness, not comfort, because we were made in the image and likeness of Greatness itself. We are made to set the world on fire.

The harvest is plenty but the laborers are few. Let’s ask God to break our hearts. Break open our hearts so that we can accept the greatness for which we were created and are destined. Break our hearts to recognize our need for You and bring other to You. Light the dynamite.
