The photo shows a painting of Mary and Jesus through the eye hole of a prison cell. The artist, Grace, was imprisoned for fighting for freedom during the Irish civil war. Previously she was also wed to her husband, Joseph, in that same jail when he was arrested for being an Irish rebel. He was executed the next day.

Despite the political, emotional, and personal tragedy that this woman endured, she still stuck to her faith. She believed that Mary would protect her always. I see this photo almost as a peephole, a glimpse into my own heart, and I would hope that any stranger would see a similar image housed in my heart.
